Neighborhood Tree Planting Program

New street trees are planted on a cyclical basis—prioritizing the most heat-vulnerable neighborhoods first. Parks does not take requests for new street trees; alternatively, each neighborhood will be inspected and planted sequentially. NYC Parks’ Neighborhood Tree Planting program aims to plant the entire city on a 9-year cycle.

Maps of our implementation goals group the planned 9-year neighborhood planting cycle into 3 phases, representing the approximate areas we intend to plant during each phase. All plantings are within the City-owned public right-of-way.

Please see our 9-year cycle maps and the transition plan (2025-2026) below, which illustrates the areas where trees will be planted during the transition phase leading to full implementation of the Neighborhood Tree Planting Program.

Once the transition planting phase (2025- 2026) is completed, we will group the neighborhood planting cycle into three stages for street tree planting. We aim to plant all sections of the city during this 9 year time frame.
